Palm-leaf book in Malay and Arabic.

This volume, written by an unknown author, describes general principles of physics, with numerous sketches illustrating the text. There are a few notations in Spanish by Juan Bastolleros.

Descripçaó e uso De Dynamomêtro, Para contreur e comparar a forca relativa dos homens a dos cavallos e de todas as bêstas de tiro: para julgar a resistencia das maguinas... This instrument was used for measuring and comparing the relative strength of men, horses, and other beasts of burden. Also included are descriptions of other instruments, and engraved plate illustrations.

These letters concern botanical matters, with special reference to descriptions and identification in Denke's herbarium.

Born in Chartres, France, on August 9, 1722, the chevalier de Berny studied law before entering the military. During the Seven Years War he served in the Low Countries and Germany, retiring to Strasbourg after fifteen campaigns and a number of wounds with the Bavarian Order of St. Michel. He claimed familiarity with a number of European princes and ministers and the protection of the Comte de Vergennes. Berny is known as well as the master of a writing academy in Brussels and as a draftsman. He died on January 22, 1779. Professing admiration for Franklin's support for the arts and sciences, and ever interested in ingratiating himself to the celebrated and powerful, the chevalier de Berny dedicated his "L'Oeil du Maître, ou essai sur le ministére," to Franklin in February 1778. In this essay on governance and the qualifications, activities, virtues, and vices of ministers to the king, Berny excuses himself, a draftsman, for commenting upon the affairs of state by insisting that the thoughts in his essay arose from long personal experience: "le fruit de la fréquentation de nombre de Cours oú j'ai résidé depuis la paix dernière." Franklin appears never to have acknowledged its receipt.

The commission of the Institut de France was charged with offering a prize on linguistics, under the will of Count Volney. Formerly, this essay was thought to have been by Baron Nicolas Massias (1764-1848), who won the Volney prize in 1828. However, the note that the volume was shipped from New York precludes that.

Two bound volumes in Turkish using the Ottoman Turkish (Perso-Arabic based) script. Associated with the Ottoman Department of State, one volume is entitled "Inscha, or Turkish Letter Writer" and contains forms of business letters; the other is docketed as "Turjiman Nameh," or the "Turkish Interpreter's Assistant. Forms of letters."

Comedies and tragedies, possibly not all by Mme. Brillon, entitled :La mort de Sénèque," "Charles le Mauvais, roi de Navarre; ou, La clémence du roi Jean," "Charles premier, roi d'Angleterre," "Marguerite d'Anjou, reine d'Angleterre," "Molière aux enfers," "Le songe, opéra comique," and "Le bienfaisant maladroit; ou, plus de bruit que de besogne."

Relating especially to American Philosophical Society business, these papers contain letters to and from men of science and institutions in Europe on the purchase and shipment of books and on the pubications of the Society. Many of the letters are to or from John Vaughan.

An early Welsh emigrant to Pennsylvania, David Evans was educated at Yale (1713) before answering the call to Presbyterian pulpits in the Welsh Tract of Delaware and Pennsylvania, and to the church at Pilesgrove, N.J. Written entirely in Latin in 1747 when Evans was 66 years old, the Aliquot Rudimenta Physicae consists of four separate compendia bound together, the Compendium Technologiae, Logicae, Rhetoricae, and Physicae. The work is an interesting and thorough attempt to summarize a system of knowledge with impeccable American provenance.

By an unknown author, this notebook is of experiments and the history of experiments with electricity, containing references to Franklin, Beccaria, and Priestley, etc.

Principally by Mme. Brillon, these compositions include marches, sonatas, and songs. Included is "La Marche des Insurgents" which Mme. Brillon composed after receiving news from Benjamin Franklin of General Burgoyne's surrender at Saratoga in 1777.

A published first edition, 1837, of Jean Baptiste Gaspard Roux de Rochelle's History of the United States of America, in French, with a companion volume of original sketches used for the 96 engraved plates. Sketches are of American scenes and history, some apparently original, others after de Bry and other artists, all used in Roux de rochelle's book.

This work contains some material on electricity. There are also 14 plates, representing the essential elements of mathematics, physics, and cosmography.

This treatise includes experiments on eletricity (with mentions of B. Franklin), ballooning (mentions of J. P. Blanchard), pharmacology, chemistr, and hydraulics. Included is a sketch of Woulfe's bottle for passing gases through liquids (Peter Woulfe, 1767).

The papers of the Italian natural philosopher and electrician, Giambatista Beccaria (1716-1781) contain letters to Benjamin Franklin, Joseph Banks, Laura Bassi, Gian Francesco Cigna, and others on a variety of scientific topics, including atmospheric and terrestrial electricity, the aurora borealis, earthquakes, meteorology, and phosphorescence. In addition to Beccaria's epistolary essays, the collection includes several journals of meteorological observations and notes for Giovanni Eandi's biography of Beccaria.

The papers include miscellaneous letters, letterbooks, books, certificates, and diplomas of various members of the Muhlenberg family. Among them are photostats of letters and papers of General John Peter Gabriel Muhlenberg and officers of the Continental Army on military affairs in the Southern Department during the American Revolution (1772-1804); photostats of letters to Albert Gallatin, Nathanael Greene, Edward Hand, Winthrop Sargent, Baron von Steuben, William Alexander, and George Washington; photostat of General Muhlenberg's journal of trips to the Ohio (1784, 1797); photostats of letters and notes of Gotthilf H. E. Muhlenberg, including a diary kept at Halle (1771) and extracts of thirty letters to Stephen Elliott of Beaufort and Charleston, South Carolina (1808-1815); photostats of letters of Henry A. Muhlenberg about his biography of General Muhlenberg (1848-1849); and photostats of letters of Henry Melchior Muhlenberg (1711-1787). Also included is an original letterbook of Peter Muhlenberg, paymaster of the United States Army, kept at Augusta and Savannah, Georgia (1836-1842). Henry Muhlenberg's notebooks (1784-1813), written in Latin or German script, in a small hand, includes a wealth of botanical observations, with a focus on Lancaster, Pennsylvania. The Henry Muhlenberg journals are a record of daily occurrences, with many features of a commonplace book, containing prescriptions, notes of questions asked candidates for the Lutheran ministry, and the plan of a barn. There is also a biographical account of Rev. Henry Melchior Muhlenberg (1711-1787).

This collection includes letters from, and drafts of letters to, scientists, artists, musicians, soldiers, political figures, and court personages throughout Europe, especially Italy and France. Topics covered range from personal and social affairs to agriculture, botany, geology, natural history, coinage, museum management, politics, weights and measures, current affairs. The collection also includes four diaries, housed separately with manuscript volumes.
